Certification for LibreOffice service providers

The Document Foundation, has announced the launch of a certification program. By offering the program, the organisation behind the development of the open source office suiteLibreOffice is aiming both to underline LibreOffice’s maturity as a software product and to strengthen the service provider ecosystem.

Under current plans, a range of certificates will be offered. Certified Developerswill be able to offer Level 3 support to enterprise customers and fix any source code problems. Certified Migration Professionals will be able to coordinate the migration process from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice. Certified Professional Trainers should have something to offer by way of training even to advanced LibreOffice users. There will also be certified Support Professionals able to offer Level 1 and the more demanding Level 2 support. A dedicated committee will specify the precise criteria for the various certification options.

The Document Foundation has stressed that this certification program is not meant to create competition for LibreOffice’s corporate sponsors (Red Hat, Canonical and SUSE), even if it is aimed at the corporate environment. The Foundation also announced that creating an end user training certification is of a lower priority but might be delivered later, “as a by-product of the corporate training”.
